Instructional Design

Instructional Design is the art and science of presenting information in a way that it enables learners to most efficiently and effectively master that information.  In a broad sense, Instructional Design includes: determining the desired learning and/or behavioral outcomes; identifying the targeted learners existing knowledge and experience; and developing a training program that will efficiently and effectively achieve the desired results.  Proper Instructional Design ensures that training dollars are well spent.

LeanForward’s instructional design model is based on the concept of lean forward activities.  Lean forward activities are those that engage the user and thus require the user's effort and concentration.  Such activities ensure that the user is actively participating in the experience, causing them to lean forward.  When applied to learning technology, lean forward technologies interact with the learner to promote a deeper understanding of the information being presented. Learners who receive lean forward methods of instruction are therefore more likely to master the information and apply that knowledge in real-life situations.

LeanForward’s instructional design model begins with the Instructional System Design (ISD) model known as ADDIE (analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate).  Upon this foundation, LeanForward incorporates advanced instructional design and adult learning philosophies such as:

  • Robert Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction
  • Benjamin Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives
  • John Keller’s ARCS Model of Motivation
  • Malcolm Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory

By blending the best of many instructional design models and adult learning theories, LeanForward’s instructional model enables us to maximize the learner’s comprehension, retention and behavior change.
